The origins of Reflexology
The Chinese are documented as developing the most early form of reflexology around 5000 years ago. Since then many civilizations have used foot and hand massage similar to therapeutic techniques that are used in reflexology today. Reflexologists believe that the feet and hands mirror the body, so that various body systems can be treated through them. The feet, hands and the rest of the body are also divided into a series of vertical zones. As the feet and hands have many nerve endings, applying massage and pressure to them is believed to relieve problems and restore a balancing effect to bodily systems along that particular zone.
What to expect during a treatment
A brief health evaluation will be provided, followed by a sequence of foot and hand massage, which will take around 1 hour. You will only need to remove shoes and socks during the treatment process. The type of massage you receive will be be gentle and relaxing, although there may be a little tenderness if grittiness is found on particular points. Grittiness indicates the presence of uric acid crystals that often found on certain points, which indicate problem areas in relevant parts of the body. Dispersing these crystals is thought promote healing and restore a balancing effect to the functioning of the body area being treated. Therapeutic oils may also be used according to your preference and to enhance healing effects of the treatment.
